Matthew 2:13 NASB
Now when they had gone, behold,
an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph
in a dream and said,
“Get up! Take the Child and His mother
and flee to Egypt,
and remain there until I tell you;
for Herod is going to search for the Child
to destroy Him.”
Devotional
It was nice that those wise men paid tribute and gifts.
But then comes the harsh reality: Herod’s hatred and the threat of murder.
Joseph is told in a dream that they must flee.
But before the word ‘flee’ is mentioned, something else has already been said: take the Child. First take that Child in your arms, then you may, and can hear the rest: flee to Egypt and wait there for further orders.
The Child is even named before His mother.
That is a signal for us.
There may be great, unimaginable problems ahead of us in the near future.
That is why the command now sounds first: take the Child.
Don’t face the future alone.
Does that help?
Ask Joseph!
Flight with a baby?
Isn’t that a big obstacle?
Yes, it seems. But Joseph also knows something else.
That child has a special name: Immanuel.
That means: God is with us.
This allows us to face the future with confidence.
