Colossians 2:16-17
Therefore NO ONE IS TO ACT AS YOUR JUDGE in regard to FOOD or DRINK or in respect to a FESTIVAL or a NEW MOON or a SABBATH DAY, things which are a MERE SHADOW of what is to come; but THE SUBSTANCE BELONGS TO CHRIST.
In the world of RELIGIOUS IDEAS, Paul reminds the Colossian Christians that while the religions around them may sound good, and may better fit their desired lifestyle, these religions are, ONLY A SHADOW of what God offers us in Jesus.
IN JESUS, WE HAVE REALITY:
spiritual reality and human reality.
God has become one of us in Jesus, so we could be one with him. (Emmanuel – God with us).
WHAT IS REAL, IS WHAT WE FIND IN JESUS.
When the real substance came, the shadows lost their value.
Every mortal man is, through the law, guilty of death.
The condition of the ungodly and unholy person is very dreadful.
Woe those who trample under foot the blood of the Son of God, whereby alone their sin can be blotted out!
Let NOBODY be troubled about judgments which relate to food, or the Jewish solemnities. The setting apart of a portion of our time for the worship and service of God, is a moral and unchangeable duty, but this had and has no necessary dependence, upon the seventh day of the week, the sabbath of the Jews.
Neither on the Sunday, the first day of the week, or the Lord’s day. This is the time kept holy by Christians, in remembrance of Christ’s resurrection.
The Jewish rites were merely shadows of Gospel blessings, and when the real substance came, the shadows are no more than a memory. They foretold us the great things that were, and still are coming.
