Micah 1:3 KJV
For, behold, the Lord cometh forth out of his place,
and will come down,
and tread upon the high places of the earth.
In other words:
Look! The Lord is leaving his place and he is coming down to the earth.
He will come to the high places (where you worship false gods).
He will destroy those places when he comes.
Tread upon the high places of the earth
▪︎ This means that He shall destroy the fortified heights (compare Deuteronomy 32:13, 33:29 [GROTIUS].
▪︎ This means that God will come to judge the strong cities and strongholds.
We do not find an ongoing story in this book by Micah, but a collection of prophecies.
Also around Christmas, this text is regularly quoted in a different light. It is then remembered that the Lord descends. That is certainly not something ordinary!
We read about this more often in the Old Testament.
- The Lord descends to see the evil of Sodom – He then brings judgment on the wicked city.
- The Lord descends because He has heard the cry of His people to save Israel from Egypt.
- The Lord descends – He does that when the situation is most serious;
He personally interferes with it.
The situation is also very serious in Micah’s day.
The Lord descends because of Jacob’s transgression and the sins of Israel.
The judgment is unavoidable.
We can also think of this around Christmas.
The Lord descends because the situation is very serious, because of the many transgressions, not only of Israel, but also of you and me.
Only then He came not to judge us, but to declare grace to us.
He himself took the judgment in the person of His Son.
