Many times when I quoted from the New Testament and mentioned the word “Gospel” I got questions like “What is the Gospel?” So I thought it would be good to give some explanation.
The Gospel (Greek: εὐαγγέλιον, euangélion), or the Good News, is the news of the coming of the Kingdom of God.
Mark 1:14-15
¹⁴Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, ¹⁵and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
This message of Good News is given to us in the Bible.
The theology of it, is given to us in most of the New Testament letters, which relate to the saving acts of God, Who, through the blood offering of Jesus, dead on the cross, and His resurrection from the dead, brought mankind reconciliation with the Father
The Gospel also is the Good News of Jesus’ ascension to heaven, the descent of the Holy Spirit, and the return (second coming) of Jesus.
This Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ is not a new concept, but one that has been foretold throughout the Old Testament and was prophetically preached even at the time of the fall of man.
Genesis 3:14-15
¹⁴The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; ¹⁵And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
To go short: The Gospel is the Good News that you can be saved from the wrath of God, and live in His Kingdom, when you accept His invitation. Not accepting doesn’t change a thing for the people who neglect, because in their present state they are already lost, and on their way to eternal destruction.
