Psalms 119:33-40
These verses are a prayer, of a man who has set his heart on living, in a way that glorifies God. And I pray that as such, it will also be the prayer, that lives in the heart, of each of us.
³³Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, And I shall observe it to the end.
Teach me Your statutes Lord, he prays, and he did not mean just the words, so he could recite them by head, but in the way of applying them.
Hearing in the Hebrew language includes doing what is said.
³⁴Give me understanding, that I may observe Your law And keep it with all my heart. ³⁵Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.
The right understanding of the scriptures, we receive from the Father, through the Holy Spirit which He gave to us.
But when the Spirit reveals the word to us, it can only be sufficient to us, if we are also have received the wisdom, so we can understand what it means.
Only when we know and understand God’s word, we are able to follow and walk the path of His statutes.
³⁶Incline my heart to Your testimonies and not to dishonest gain. ³⁷Turn away my eyes from looking at vanity, And revive me in Your ways.
The longing in the prayer in these verses is to stay free from covetousness and in the ways of the Lord.
When you say you want to stay close to the Lord, and experience God’s love, it means at the same time that you want to get rid of the love you once had for the world.
For the friendship with the world is enmity with God, as we can read in the epistle of James.
James 4:4
You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
³⁸Establish Your word to Your servant, As that which produces reverence for You.
³⁹Turn away my reproach which I dread, For Your ordinances are good.
⁴⁰Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me through Your righteousness.
Let this also be our prayer. Revive me through Your righteousness. Quicken me in your way. Not to just redeem time, but also to do all duties lively and full of energy.
Even when the body gets weaker and older, the spirit and the soul can still be strong. Strong enough to pull people away from the pit of hell.
When you are on the way with your Lord, you should not have attention for al kinds of vanity you may pass, for it will slow you down.
