But whereunto shall I liken this generation?
It is like unto children sitting in the markets,
and calling unto their fellows,

But to what shall I compare this generation?
Children can sometimes be a nuisance!
Apparently the Lord Jesus has been watching them play.
▪︎ Some want to play wedding, but the others don’t feel like it.
▪︎ Then play a funeral? But the others don’t like that either.
Like that is this generation, said the Lord Jesus.
▪︎ John announced the judgment, which was much too heavy for some.
▪︎ Christ proclaimed the Gospel, which others found much too light.
Even today the Gospel is not to the liking of man.
▪︎ It tells us that we are sinners, and we don’t want that.
▪︎ It proclaims grace to us, and we are enemies of it.
But by the light of the Holy Spirit, John is not too sharp and Jesus is not too lovely. Then we will agree with the Lord, and say: Your Word is the truth.
