Matthew 13:07
And some fell among thorns;
and the thorns sprung up,
and choked them:
Devotional
Seed also fell among the thorns.
I think we can understand this this way.
■ The part of the thorns growing above the ground will have been burned when the field was burned bare to rid it of the weeds, but the roots are still in the earth.
The seed that falls on those spots does something!
But the roots of the thorns also do something!
The latter grow even faster and choke the seed. The tender shoots lose it from the tough thorns.
■ Or that when the field was prepared for sowing that something was left behind in places.
The thorns are the image of the cares and riches of life.
In short: the pleasures and burdens of life.
These choke the Word.
Think of the worries of life.
How much it affects all of us.
With some, worries keeps them so busy that the Bible stays closed, that the word passes them by, and that prayer is silenced.
Those are the thorns in our lives now.
And watch out!
They just keep growing.
Even the smallest thought of God is suffocated by them.
Can you feel the warning in this part of the parable?
▪︎ No more time to seek God.
▪︎ Too busy to think about eternity.
▪︎ So much to do with the body that there is no desire to open the Word.
Is it me, Lord?
