Matthew 13:4
And when he sowed,
some [seeds] fell by the way side,
and the fowls came and devoured them up

The good seed also falls on the hardened path that runs through the fields.
The birds are immediately there to snatch it away.
The Lord Jesus explains this part of the parable as follows:
If anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart.
So when you hear the Word, but not understand it, the evil one, that is the devil, is immediately there to take the Word of God out of our minds and memories.
Do you recognize this?
The hearts of many who live under the preaching have become like the hard-packed ground of the road by the field.
The message does reach them, but it does not penetrate them.
- Year in, year out they haar the sermons.
- They just let it all get to them.
- They remain unmoved under the sweetest invitations.
- They remain unmoved under the strictest admonitions.
- Neither heaven nor hell can touch them.
And if something ever gets stuck in their minds, the birds of heaven are there to snatch it away.
It was nothing more than a glancing shot that hit them.
And the application of all this?
Is it me, Lord?
Has my heart become that hardened ground?
