Luke 2:8-10 NASB
⁸In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.
⁹And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. ¹⁰But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people
Devotional
Although we sing about peace on earth around Christmas, true peace cannot be found among people on earth even after more than 2000 years.
Anxiety and fear dominate the lives of millions. Not only for the threat of war but also for diseases that are prevalent.
Yet the Christmas Gospel is also a declaration of war!
A declaration of war on fear.
Everyone knows what fear is.
Fear scares you.
Fear puts a damper on your life.
You know, God minds that.
That is why the Christmas Gospel tells us that God in Christ is fighting against the fears that can beset us.
He knows that fear of life and terror are constantly lurking in our lives.
That fear cannot simply be dispelled with a few candles. More is needed. That takes God.
Look at those shepherds.
Tough men.
Not really scared.
But when the darkness suddenly gives way to heavenly light on Christmas night, they are very much afraid.
The angel says: Fear not.
Not only during Christmas, but also now God tells you not to be afraid. Because He wants to walk with you through life in Jesus Christ.
May the Lord Jesus, who came to us as a very ordinary person, now also very simply, go with you on your way through life? Then there is always someone whom you can turn to if you are afraid.
