Luke 2:7
And she gave birth to her firstborn son;
and she wrapped Him in cloths,
and laid Him in a manger,
because there was no room for them in the inn.
These old words are full of the Gospel of the grace of God.
No one has ever fully understood the deep secret that is contained in these words.
Faith, however, embraces what is here reported.
Mary gave birth to her firstborn Son.
But this Son is also the only Son of God the Father.
He, who was placed here in the manger, came for us.
▪︎ He is born, God from God, and man from man.
▪︎ He was born from a woman, through the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit.
▪︎ He is the Mediator between God and man.
▪︎ He is the Bondsman. The latter, that He is also the Bondsman, is evident from the poor circumstances under which He was born. Wrapped in cloths and placed in a manger.
A poor Bondsman, made poor for you, that through His poverty, He might make you rich.
The Bondsman had to get so poor because we got so poor.
He wanted to take over our poverty. He has denied his wealth.
He hid the glory of His Deity behind the garment of His human nature.
So He came to take over our debt and pay it to the last penny.
