Matthew 3:4 NASB
Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair
and a leather belt around his waist;
and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Study
John’s appearance is strongly reminiscent of Elijah (2 Kings 1:8).
Possibly the clothing he wore was characteristic of a prophet (Isaiah 20:2; Zechariah 13:4). In any case, it was suitable for desert dwellers.
Like his frugal clothing, John also ate frugal food (cf. Matthew 11:18).
Four kinds of locusts were allowed to be eaten (Leviticus 11:22).
It was not an uncommon food among the poor. They were eaten in various ways with butter or honey as accompaniment (wild honey: Judges 14:8-9; 1 Samuel 14:25,27).
