When we look at the genealogy from Adam to Noah, people claim that it has a message in the names, pointing to the Gospel of Jesus.
The meaning should show us:
Adam = “Man (is)”
Seth = “appointed”
Enos = “mortal”
Kenan = “sorrow (but)”
Mahalaleel = “the blessed God”
Jared = “shall come down”
Enoch = “teaching”
Methuselah = “his death shall bring”
Lamech = “the despairing”
Noah = “comfort, rest”
I found this interesting, so I wanted to see it for myself.
But I found something quite different when I looked at the Hebrew names.
Adam = “red”
Seth = “compensation”
Enos = “man”
Kenan = “possession”
Mahalaleel = “praise of God”
Jared = “descent”
Enoch = “dedicated”
Methuselah = “man of the dart” (Hebrew)
Lamech = “powerful”
Noah = “rest”
Maybe the meaning could be found in the Greek text?
There were some differences in the meaning, but also here I could not find what people claimed it would say.
Adam = “the red earth”
Seth= “compensation”
Enos = “mortal man”
Cainan = “their smith”
Mahalaleel= “praise of God”
Jared= “descent”
Enoch= “dedicated”
Methuselah = “when he dies, there shall be an emission”
Lamech = “why thus with thee? unto bringing low”
Noah= “rest”
It would have been nice if the statement was correct.
But I couldn’t find any proof for it.
Is there maybe still an other source which may have been used?
For now I believe that the statement is just wishful thinking, but incorrect.
