These are the last words that the Lord Jesus said to His disciples before He took leave of them. He went back to heaven, to his Father because his work on earth was finished. They had to be left without Him with them. And that while they knew it was not going to be easy for them.
The last words of someone we love are often very appealing to us. They stay with us, sometimes they sing in our hearts for years. It was a sad moment for the disciples when their Master left them. They desperately needed encouragement.
The Lord Jesus, who knew them, knew that. That is why He spoke words to those that could really comfort them. He wouldn’t be with them anymore, but He wanted to be with them. Not temporarily, but every day.
What the Lord Jesus promised his disciples was not fiction. It was reality.
They experienced that in the days, the years that followed. In times of health, in times of illness, persecution, tribulation, trouble and worry. Continuously.
What He promised to His disciples was not just for them. The promise of the Lord Jesus, “I am with you every day,” applies to everyone who knows Him as His Savior. Every day, that is to say: Every day again He is with us. He knows the sorrow, the pain, the sorrow of all his own. Nothing escapes Him.
▪︎ It gives strength to bear what seems almost unbearable.
▪︎ He gives courage where we are in danger of losing courage.
▪︎ He gives comfort when we are inconsolable
▪︎ He helps when all human help has passed us.
Paul was a man who had been through a lot. Nevertheless, he was able to testify on the basis of his own experience:
“For He said:
I will by no means fail you,
I will by no means leave you.
Therefore, we can say with confidence:
The Lord is my helper,
I will not fear
what would a man do to me. “
