Joel 3:18 KJV
And it shall come to pass in that day,
that the mountains shall drop down new wine,
and the hills shall flow with milk,
and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters,
and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord ,
and shall water the valley of Shittim.
The mountains shall drop down new wine
This is figurative for an abundance of vines, which were cultivated in terraces of earth between the rocks on the sides of the hills of Palestine
Amos 9:13
“Behold, days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“When the plowman will overtake the reaper
And the treader of grapes him who sows seed;
When the mountains will drip sweet wine
And all the hills will be dissolved.”
The hills shall flow with milk
That the hills shall flow with milk means that the hills shall abound in flocks and herds yielding milk plentifully, through the richness of the pastures.
Waters
Waters will make the soil fruitful
Isaiah 30:23
Then He will give you rain for the seed
which you will sow in the ground,
and bread from the yield of the ground,
and it will be rich and plenteous;
on that day your livestock will graze
in a roomy pasture.
A fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord,
and shall water the valley of Shittim.
Blessings, material and spiritual, are coming from God’s house at Jerusalem, and will reach even the most barren places (hearts).
God promises his own an abundance of grace. (Amos 9:13).
Joel draws the great future, which will dawn, with the images of his time, it cannot be understood otherwise. Just as God bows Himself down to people, adapts Himself, so to speak, to our thinking level, so we can understand Him, in a similar way people speak about Him, according to the measure of our little knowledge.
So also here.
A fountain will go out from the house of the Lord is speaking of a source, of a sign of life, of life force.
And wherever the water from that well will come, there will be renewal, purification; sins will be taken away and life will blossom to the glory of God.
Does this not involuntarily make us think of Paradise? The paradise in which a river flowed, which gave life and bloom everywhere?
All things become new!
This only comes to us from God, through the blessed Mediator, Jesus the Christ, in Whom there is a complete atonement for all sins!
Shittim
The water shall extend even to Shittim, on the border between Moab and Israel, beyond the Jordan (Numbers 25:1, 33:49, Joshua 2:1, Micah 6:5). It is the place of Israel’s encampment between the conquest of the transjordanic region and crossing the Jordan into Canaan.
- “Shittim” means “acacias,” which grow only in arid regions: implying that even the arid desert shall be fertilized by the blessing from Jerusalem.
- So Ezekiel 47:1-12 describes the waters issuing from the threshold of the house as flowing into the Dead Sea, and purifying it.
- Also in Zechariah 14:8 the waters flow on one side into the Mediterranean, on the other side into the Dead Sea, near which latter Shittim was situated (compare Psalms 46:4, Revelation 22:1).
(Shittim is also a place west of Jerusalem)
