Joel 2:17
Let the priests, the Lord’s ministers,
Weep between the porch and the altar,
And let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord,
And do not make Your inheritance a reproach,
A byword among the nations.
Why should they among the peoples say,
“Where’s their God?” “
The trumpet sounds again. The next alarm stage.
But it is not just an alarm signal.
The trumpet also calls for revival.
Joel 2:15-17 recall the last verses of Joel 1.
After the plague of locusts, the people were called to humble and pray.
Now it happens again.
The priests are instructed to intercede.
Between the gate and the altar: where the service of reconciliation takes place.
Spare your people, O LORD! Do not turn your legacy into reproach.
Judah has nothing to boast about.
An appeal to God sounds instead.
Your people. Your legacy.
Lord, have you committed yourself to us?
We are not pleading our righteousness, but Your mercies.
We also cannot boast of anything.
What will survive when God comes to judge our lives?
Do you know of this kind of prayer, which clings to God in hope against hope?
Lord, it is Your business. Your Church in our country and in this world.
Do not turn your legacy into reproach.
All the people are called to gather in the house of God, in the temple: the elders, but also the little ones; after all, if they were to stay at home, the mothers would not be able to be present and no one should be missed.
Will the Lord turn and repent and have mercy on His people again?
In particular, the priests are then called to intercede for the people.
The words are told, and put in their mouth, “Spare Your people, O Lord, and do not surrender Your inheritance to a reproach.”
Do we not think of that one Priest, Who in His intercession carries all His own before God? His prayer has power, and happy is everyone who is included in it.
