Matthew 13:47
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet
cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind;
A net thrown into the sea.
A net! What a miracle this is; that God wants to catch us.
Do you know what we would deserve? That it had said: a depth charge thrown into the sea. You know: a bomb that explodes at a certain depth in the sea.
And which then destroys all living beings. A depth charge that takes care of us.
We deserve that! Because of our disobedience to God; because of our sins.
But God doesn’t want to destroy us! God wants to catch us! That is why it says here: a net cast into the sea.
A net! That is a remarkable picture. Because a fish hates a net. There is no fish that spontaneously swims to a net. The sea, the water, there he feels in his element. There he literally feels like a fish in water. Even though the water may be very dirty. So polluted. A fish struggles!
And we? Are we not also trying to get out of the Gospel(net)?
Because we don’t want to be taken out of our sinful element?!
Indeed, a fish that is caught dies.
To be caught in the net of the Gospel is to die to yourself!
But I assure you, that’s life. Real life. Eternal life. Then you are safe. For better and for worse. In life and death.
