Matthew 5:27 NASB
You have heard that it was said,
‘You shall not commit adultery’
Devotional
The Lord Jesus did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets, but to fulfill them.
He shows us the wide scope of the commandments in His teaching.
The commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery” was often interpreted as follows: It is enough to straf away from actual adultery. The desire to do so, would not be sinful.
The Lord shows that it is not only about the outward behavior that matters, but that it is precisely what is in the heart that matters. Christ spoke it: “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath already committed adultery in his heart with her.”
The unclean look is sin against the seventh commandment.
To look at another’s wife, which awakens desire, is sin.
Though that desire does not go beyond the heart, yet it is a transgression against the seventh commandment.
Sensuous magazines should therefore be avoided.
True self-knowledge reveals that I am an adulterer and makes the supplication: Turn my eye from the vanities.
