Mark 14:37
And He came and found them sleeping,
and said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep?
Could you not keep watch for one hour?
Devotional
Jesus prayed three times in the garden.
Three times he returned to His disciples.
He has sought the company of His closest friends. He was truly human. But the three disciples who were most dear to Him slept. They did not support Him.
All they idd was underline His loneliness.
They slept while He struggled.
Grief was increased by His friends. And we haven’t gotten better since Gethsemane. Faithless friends. Impotent crutches.
Simon ! Jesus cried. It is precisely Peter that He calls upon.
What great words Simon Peter had said. He would … But nothing comes of it. Simon ! you? How that word will have cut through his heart.
Are you sleeping? It may be possible that this word sleep meant that they were overcome with sadness. They couldn’t bear Jesus wrestling like that. That is very well possible. But this shows all the more how weak in courage and how small in strength we are.
No, big words don’t suit us.
No, we can only bow our heads in shame.
And we must fear for ourselves.
I am not afraid of anyone, said one Christian, except of myself.
