Joel 2:1
Blow a trumpet in Zion,
And sound an alarm on My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
For the day of the Lord is coming;
Surely it is near,
The plague of locusts heralds the coming day of the Lord.
In Joel 2 that day itself is the center of attention.
Blow the trumpet at Zion.
The shofar. It was used as an alarm signal in Israel.
Blow the trumpet. Big alarm. God is coming!
The trumpet sounds in Zion. That is remarkable.
Zion is the place of salvation in the Bible.
And soon we will hear Joel say: “There will be escape on Mount Zion.”
Still it is precisely there that the trumpet must be blown.
God’s judgment comes like lightning.
And lightning always strikes the highest places.
Judgment begins at the house of God.
That the trumpet is sounding, that we still receive a warning, is a miracle in itself.
We are called to be ready..!
In Revelation we read of the last trumpet, which will sound when the Christ returns.
▪︎ Many in this world don’t know about it because they still haven’t heard it. (Outrageous actually!)
▪︎ And then there are also many in this world who have heard about it, but do not want to know.
It is, therefore, the mission’s high calling is to warn those who falter.
We can hear it. And we may.., no.., we have to pass it on.
“God’s day is coming!”
And with that we hear the Gospel:
Jesus went into darkness at Golgotha in the highest alert phase for us!
Repent now, for He is near..!
As human beings, we have to warn each other in the event of impending danger. In traffic, for example.
In Israel the trumpet was blown when there was danger from an enemy army. You read that in Numbers 10.
This habit should be remembered now Joel calls the priests in Jerusalem to blow the trumpet. There is danger. The grasshopper army, which has already eaten the entire country, will now also come to Jerusalem. They will climb the city walls.
The day of God’s judgment is approaching.
By extension, Joel sees a final approach in a prophetic perspective.
Every Sunday the trumpet of God’s Word is heard in the churches.
Every day the trumpet of God’s Word sounds over the internet.
I hope you will hear a clear trumpet.
By the sound of His Word, the Lord warns of impending danger.
What danger?
The danger that you would live unrepentantly and unreconciled in the day of God’s judgment.
In Christ is salvation.
I also sound that trumpet. Every day
