You sometimes hear this name fall out of someone’s mouth as an exclamation of surprise.
When they say this, they do not realize at all what they actually say.
It is also a shame; for that Name is just too holy for that.
But do we realize what in fact the meaning of the Name is?
I want to speak specifically now about the word “Christ,” which means: Anointed One!
Since this is not His name but His quality, you may have noticed that I always write Jesus the Christ, Jesus the Messiah, or Jesus the Anointed One. Instead of Jesus Christ, Jesus Messiah, or Jesus Anointed One
You probably know that the prophet Samuel successively anointed Saul and David as king over Israel. High priests and prophets were also anointed during Old Testament times.
That sign brought to mind the indispensable, special graces of the Holy Ghost that were necessary to fulfill such a high office.
Now, Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit, without measure, to our only Prophet, High Priest and King, and therefore the addition of ‘the Messiah’ or ‘the Christ’ also belongs to Him.
Christ (Greek) and Messiah (Hebrew) both mean ‘Anointed One’.
Jesus alone fulfilled His office perfectly, and that gives courage to go on with Him again and again!
