Luke 2:29
Lord, now lettest Thou thy servant depart in peace,
according to Thy word:
Have you ever looked at it this way?
Every year, every month, every week, every day, yes, every hour that you live you come closer to death, or to the second coming of my Lord.
And then you will also meet the creator of heaven and earth.
Then you too will stand before His judgment seat and be judged by Him.
How do you feel about that?
Do you fear that moment? Are you perhaps still indifferent about it, or is it something you look forward to, is there a desire in your heart to finally meet Him?
That desire is not a death wish as if you would be tired of life!
But a longing for God.
Lord, when will the day come that I may be with you, Peter Datheen sang.
That should of course be possible.
Many people are not ready for death. They don’t want death to come, because they are not ready to die. Is that perhaps why so many people are panicking about corona? A disease that, incidentally, demands far fewer deaths than the flu epidemic of two years ago. But then people reacted soberly. “It’s going around” we said then, and continued our daily activities.
This time, however, the media has brought fear, and people are still panicking.
At the beginning it was said that everyone who got it would die.
After all, to die is to meet God. And without Jesus it cannot be without serious consequences. Outside of Jesus, it is impossible to go peacefully, because everyone, even if they don’t believe it, realizes deep in their hearts that they need a Savior.
Outside of Jesus it is impossible to enter His Kingdom.
As today’s text shows, Simeon was ready and could say, “Lord, let Your servant go in peace, according to Your word”. The Lord had promised him that he would not die until he saw the Christ.
Now let Thy servant go.
That is an expression for soldiers who have served abroad and are now allowed to go home. So “letting go” is going home. For Simeon it is to the Father’s house, where Jesus came from, and is placed in a manger.
Simeon was able to go to the Father’s House because the Son had entered the house of service.
And now about you!
When the time comes when you have to say goodbye to this life, where will you spend eternity? Is it indeed a ‘rest in peace’ for you, or … ??
As long as you are still alive, you can change your eternal destiny! Do not wait to long…!
