These days there are not many churches left that don’t have their emphasis on MATERIAL BLESSINGS.
Some churches even say that if you are NOT RICH (when they say this, they mean earthly riches), you may be living under A CURSE.
Maybe you didn’t give enough in the offering, maybe you didn’t give your tenth, maybe you live in sin, and so on.
Whatever the reason, they always come up with something, with what they can BLAME THE SICK OR POOR person. And by doing this they load more guilt on themselves.
They will tell you “GOD’S BLESSINGS MAKE RICH”. Yes. This is true, it’s also true that if we pray God will give what we NEED. Not what we WANT.
Matthew 6:31-32
³¹Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ ³²For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you NEED all these things.
2 Corinthians 8:13-14
¹³For this is not for the ease of others and for your affliction, but by way of equality ¹⁴at this present time your abundance being a supply for THEIR NEED, so that their abundance also may become a supply for YOUR NEED, that there may be equality;
Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply all YOUR NEEDS according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
In the epistle to the Colossians (3:1-8)
We read something completely different from what is preached in those churches. We read there in verse 2:
“SET YOUR MIND ON THE THINGS ABOVE, NOT ON THE THINGS THAT ARE ON EARTH”.
The Gospel is about the Kingdom of heaven, not about a life in luxury on earth.
Colossians 3:1-4
¹Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, KEEP SEEKING THE THINGS ABOVE, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. ²SET YOUR MIND ON THE THINGS ABOVE, not on the things that are on earth. ³For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. ⁴When Christ, WHO IS OUR LIFE, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
Your life and your riches are not from this world, but from above and in Christ.
The lust an greed for earthly things and possessions will cause the wrath of God to be stirred up.
Before you followed the Christ, you also lived like that. But now you changed. So why should you still long for materials that are here today, and are gone tomorrow? Rather put your mind on the eternal things.
Colossians 3:5-8
⁵Therefore consider the members of your EARTHLY BODY AS DEAD to IMMORALITY, IMPURITY, PASSION, EVIL DESIRE, and GREED, which amounts to idolatry. ⁶For it is BECAUSE OF THESE THINGS that the WRATH OF GOD will come upon the SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE, ⁷and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. ⁸But now you also, put them all aside: ANGER, WRATH, MALICE, SLANDER, and ABUSIVE SPEECH from your mouth.
Therefore follow Jesus and live a holy life to the glory of God.
