Victory Through Christ (6/6)

Acts 1:11
They also said, “Men of Galilee,
why do you stand looking into the sky?
This Jesus,
who has been taken up from you into heaven,
will come in just the same way
as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

Devotional

Acts 1:6-11
⁶So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
⁷He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; ⁸but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

The Ascension
⁹And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
¹⁰And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. ¹¹They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

Today I will walk for the Master in paths of service.

Why do you stand looking into the sky?
This was the question, the two men in white robes asked of the disciples who had just witnessed the ascension of Jesus.

The pointed inquiry seemed to break in rudely on the disciples’ rapturous mood.
But the question had a purpose. I think it was this:
▪︎ During these years you disciples have had the Master with you in intimate friendship.
▪︎ You have had rich and rewarding association with Him.
▪︎ He has given you understanding of His way of life.
▪︎ He has opened to you the wellsprings of redemptive love.

Now He has ascended into heaven.
▪︎ His purpose is not served by your gazing after Him in rapturous joy.
▪︎ The time has come for you not to look up but to look around.
▪︎ You are not now merely to enjoy a heavenly bliss;
▪︎ you are to look about for earthly ministries, doing them in the ascended Saviour’s name.
▪︎ You are now to become Christian witnesses.
▪︎ For every Christian in our generation also the rapture of the ascension must be translated into the ministry to souls.

Prayer suggestion

▪︎ Thank God for the Christ, and for what He means to you personally.
▪︎ Ask the Lord to Make you understand that your joy cannot be contained in the vessel of self, but that it must flow out into others’ lives.
