I’m writing this because some people said to me recently that I should not quote the Bible that much because “that book” doesn’t have that much authority.
Furthermore they said: “It is not God’s word”; “The Bible is no more than an interpretation of what the writer thought that was the word of God” and so on. “You should therefore not trust it that much”, but “use your own intellect” instead.
Now you can react with what is written in 2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) “ALL SCRIPTURE is given by INSPIRATION OF GOD, and is profitable for DOCTRINE, for REPROOF, for CORRECTION, for INSTRUCTION in RIGHTEOUSNESS”, but when one says it is ONLY AN INTERPRETATION of what the writer THOUGHT, that will not really impress him”.
And trusting your intellect… Beginning with Eve, the Bible is full of examples of where that brought people.
Therefore let me take an example from before, from my work.
When I wanted to write a letter to someone, I dictated the letter to my secretary, and she would type the letter for me.
During the day she would come with the letter to me, and if I saw it was correct I would sign it and give it back to her to be mailed.
Now tell me, who wrote that letter?
Yes the letter was typed by my secretary but I dictated it to her, and my name was on it, and I signed it. The letter had thereby the authority granted to me by the company I worked for, and represented.
If this is so in the world, why would it be any different in case of the Bible?
How do you think I would have reacted when she would not have written what I said, but instead had written her own interpretation?
She would have gotten me angry and she would have had to type it all over again; and this time, exactly how I dictated it to her.
If I would not allow an Interpretation, why do you think God would have allowed that. We all know that He watches over His word, don’t we?
Now let’s take it one step further.
How do you think I would react when the receiver would have ignored the letter because it was typed by my secretary?
Ofcourse I wouldn’t have accepted that, so why than do you think that God would just let it go if you are ignore what He wrote to you in the Bible?
I hope that I by this simple story could make it clear that the words in the Bible have the authority of God and that we have to take them very seriously.
And that in fact it doesn’t matter at all who put it on paper for Him.
