Matthew 13:33 KJV
Another parable spake he unto them;
The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven,
which a woman took,
and hid in three measures of meal,
till the whole was leavened.

Until it was all leavened
The work of the Holy Spirit is like leaven.
Invisibly it permeates your heart and your life.
He irresistibly does all the work.
Saving He convicts of sin, righteousness and judgment.
Often just like the sourdough, so very quiet, slow and hidden.
We always want haste and progress.
However, God’s ways are usually long ways.
His steps are quiet steps.
He practices self-knowledge and God’s knowledge.
He permeates the depths of the heart, so that we come to understand the futility of seeking fruit within ourselves.
He pervades our whole life so that we lose the ground out of all that is not God and Christ.
The Holy Spirit leaves the believer in the way of sanctification.
That is not a way of striving but of dying.
The Holy Spirit also sours through the exercises in carrying the cross.
We can best summarize this whole leavening with the word of John the Baptist: “He must increase, and I decrease.”
Do we know this quiet, ongoing work of the Holy Spirit?
Or is there still the silence of death?
Where the Lord began a good work, there He continues until the whole is leavened. What a comfort that is.
