Matthew 13:33 KJV
Another parable spake he unto them;
The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven,
which a woman took,
and hid in three measures of meal,
till the whole was leavened.
Devotional
Jesus speaks here of the daily action of a Jewish woman.
She is busy baking bread for her family. She uses leaven to make the bread rise, airy and tasty. That is a piece of dough that has become sour, similar to yeast.
With a skilled hand she kneaded the leaven all the way through the dough. It’s completely hidden in it. This is necessary, otherwise the leaven cannot do its work.
What a lesson lies here for us!
The leaven, which is the image of the graceful power of God’s kingdom, must come into our hearts. The hand of God’s Spirit is to knead our lives with the leaven of God’s grace.
Hearing the Word alone is not enough.
It must pass through us, as the leaven through the flour.
Now the woman hid the leaven not among the hard grains of wheat, but among the flour. The grains of wheat had to be ground to absorb the leaven. Likewise, our hearts must be made receptive. We need a new heart.
Yes, you already know that.
Yet today, in response to this segment of the day, we must honestly ask ourselves whether we really know this.
