These three questions show us something of the progress of a soul on its journey from indifference to anxiety, and then to the decision for, or against the Christ.
● WHAT HAVE I DONE?
This could be the sorrowful question, of a broken person, after he realized what he has done.
But not so in this case.
In Jeremiah 8:6 we read of sinners who don’t recognise their sins, who blinded as they are, don’t even see that they are sinners. We read:
“I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: NO MAN REPENTED him of his wickedness, saying, WHAT HAVE I DONE? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle”.
In this verse we see the reasoning of the CARELESS SINNER.
They did not speak the truth. And not one of them was sorry for their wickedness; Not one of them said, ‘What have I done”, not even one asked: “What have I done wrong?’
Like in those days, people today keep on going their own way. And when you point people to the terrible consequences of sin, they will, blinded as they are, tell you: “There is no danger for me, I’m a good person, I didn’t do anything wrong”. I even went to church!
As if anyone could earn his way into the Kingdom.
Being indifferent to what you may say further, they all go their own way. And with a hurting heart I see them go. Further and further away from God’s Kingdom.
An other question, the question of the person in anxiety, who realized his lost status, is:
● WHAT MUST I DO?
In Acts 16:30 we read: “Sirs, WHAT MUST I DO to be saved?”
In this verse we see the reasoning of the ANXIOUS SINNER.
This sinner realized that he needed salvation. But how could he receive that? So he asked “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
Did you also come to the point that you realized that you need salvation? Than you may, in prayer, ask the same question! And for you will also be the same answer:
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved”. (Acts 16:31)
But maybe you are still doubting.
And you are wrestling with the question:
● WHAT SHALL I DO?
In Matthew 27:22 we read this:
“Pilate saith unto them, WHAT SHALL I DO then WITH JESUS which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified”.
In this verse we see the reasoning of the UNDECIDED SINNER.
The sinner who did not yet decide is stuck with this question “WHAT SHALL I DO WITH JESUS?”
They call him the Christ.
They call him the Messiah.
But is He?
Can I believe them?
As long as you don’t make up your mind, and don’t take a decision, this question remains yours: “WHAT SHALL I DO WITH JESUS?”, and you are looking for advice.
Who will be your advisers?
▪ Will you listen to the world?
They are telling you “AWAY WITH HIM”, “CRUCIFY HIM!”
▪ Or will you listen to the preacher who tells you to FOLLOW HIM.
What will be your choice?
LIFE or DEATH?
WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH JESUS?
My advice?
FOLLOW HIM !!
