Matthew 13:47
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet
cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind
Devotional
The parable of the fishing net is the last of the seven parables about the kingdom of heaven. The number seven already brings our thoughts to the right height. It is about the consummation, the final piece, the denouement of the tangled threads of world history.
The kingdom of God is like a net thrown into the sea. Think of the dragnet that is pulled through the water. When the net is full, the fisherman takes it aboard and sorts the fish. He’s going to separate the good and the bad fish.
The good fish here are the clean fish, which have fins and scales (Lev. 11:9-12). The evil ones that are cast away are the unclean fish. They are thrown on the bank as food for the birds. This is how it will be in the near future at the end of the ages.
When the time is full, the net will be pulled in and the final separation will take place.
Here and now good and bad fish are still mixed up, swimming together.
It’s not up to us to pick up the net and separate the good from the bad.
That’s what the angels will soon do on the shores of eternity.
For us the question must be: to which species do I belong?
To the good or the bad?
