Matthew 4:16 NASB
The people who were sitting in darkness
saw a great Light,
And those who were sitting
in the land and shadow of death,
Upon them a Light dawned.”
Devotional
Everything during Christ’s life on the earth is according to the predestination of God.
Thus the Christ’s going into Galilee and His labors there is a fulfillment of Isaiah 9:2.
Isaiah 9:2
The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
Galilee has been ravaged by wars throughout history.
Tyre and Sidon were nearby, so there was much pagan influence.
There was political and religious darkness in Galilee. Just there a great light was seen and dawned: the Gospel was preached there by the Christ.
Bowed under the power of sin, men may receive joy and gladness because of the saving knowledge of God.
By nature, every person is in darkness.
Fallen man prefers darkness to light.
Though man is not in destruction, he is on the brink of destruction.
No one seeks the light of his own accord.
But the light comes on, it is an act of God according to His good pleasure.
