Genesis 4:9-10
⁹Then the Lord said to Cain,
“Where is Abel your brother?”
And he said, “I do not know.
Am I my brother’s keeper?”
¹⁰He said, “What have you done?
The voice of your brother’s blood
is crying to Me from the ground.
God speaks to us in our neighbors’ demand for bread, work, health, and education.
In short, in human worth and justice.
As to Cain, He says today to us, “Where is Abel your brother?”
And to Cain’s answer, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
He answers, ‘Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground’
As in the days of Isaiah, He calls us today to true religious duties:
Isaiah 58:6-7
⁶Is this not the fast which I choose,
To loosen the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the bands of the yoke,
And to let the oppressed go free
And break every yoke?
⁷Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
And bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the naked, to cover him;
And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
This is how Jesus Christ described the final judgment:
Matthew 25:45
Then He will answer them,
‘Truly I say to you,
to the extent that you did not do it
to one of the least of these,
you did not do it to Me.’
