And straightway
the damsel arose,
and walked;
for she was of the age of twelve years.
And they were astonished
with a great astonishment.

The restoration was immediate.
Observe that the young girl, as soon as life returned, arose, and walked (Mark 5:42).
Spiritual life will appear by our rising from the bed of sloth and carelessness, and our walking in a religious conversation, our walking up and down in Christ’s name and strength; even from those that are of the age of twelve years, it may be expected that they should walk as those whom Christ has raised to life, otherwise than in the native vanity of their minds.
Damsel
The word here is different from that in Mark 5:39-41, and signifies “young maiden,” or “little girl.”
Arose, and walked
A vivid touch evidently from an eye-witness.
They were astonished with a great astonishment
Observe that all who saw it, and heard of it, admired the miracle, and Him that made the miracle happen. “They were astonished with a great astonishment” the Bible says. The language here is the strongest.
They could not but acknowledge that something extraordinary and very great had happened, and yet they knew not what to make of it. Their wonder should have changed into a lively faith, but it came no further than astonishment.
Now let us reflect on this
The Lord Jesus resurrects a dead girl in this text.
This is not the only time Jesus has performed such a great miracle. The young man at Nain was also returned to his mother just before he was to be buried; And Lazarus after he had been in the tomb for four days was brought back to life. He himself will also rise from the dead.
Here, in the house of Jairus, by the bed upon which the dead child was laying, Jesus shows that He is the Conqueror over death, and that He is more powerful than this mighty enemy who threatens all of us.
As soon as Jesus said ‘Talitha kûmi!’ the girl opens her eyes. And with the help of Jesus, who is holding her hand, she gets to her feet, gets up, and walks back and forth in the room. She is alive again. Death had to let go of her. Jesus is the Mighty One. His word is obeyed even by the king of terror.
What a wonderful miracle!
The enemy, from whom we must all lose it, must lose it from Jesus.
That will soon be completely clear.
I mean, when this Savior returns, and when at His command all the tombs are opened. Then He will awaken all His own. And they will live. Living eternal life, with Him.
We confess it every Sunday, “I believe in the resurrection of the flesh.”
