1 Kings 12:28
Whereupon the king (Jeroboam I) took counsel,
and made two calves of gold,
and said unto them,
It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem:
behold thy gods, O Israel,
which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Devotional
God cannot compromise His standards for any reason.
The scripture is clear on this:
2 Timothy 2:19
Nevertheless,
the firm foundation of God stands,
having this seal,
“The Lord knows those who are His,”
and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord
is to abstain from wickedness.”
Pushing it a little further, the Bible says:
1 Corinthians 3:11
For no man can lay a foundation
other than the one which is laid,
which is Jesus Christ.
Today we live in a time in which people seek to follow easier ways. Just like Jeroboam arranged for the people an easier way. Instead of going to Jerusalem, where the temple was, he told the people they could go to Dan and Bethel, where he had erected two “golden calves,” which he set up as symbols of Yahweh. With this he committed the same sin as the people of Israel did while they were in the desert, waiting on the return of Moses.
Today too many seek to find easy and cheap ‘relatives’ for the ‘absolutes’ God has given or ordained. Many don’t preach the standards set by God through His Word anymore but only share watered down messages, so the congregation will like them.
In the verse we look at today, we see Jeroboam setting up golden images of calves, and proceed to tell his subjects that those images were actually the God that delivered them out of Egypt.
He reduced the King of kings to the size of an ordinary image made with human hands. What an abomination!
While trying to retain political power, Jeroboam blasphemed God.
Now check and search your life.
Have you maybe also sacrificed God’s absolute standards on the altar of cheap substitutes?
If so, repent of your sin, and make sure you obey God in your words and actions.
