Joel 3:8 KJV
And I will sell your sons and your daughters
into the hand of the children of Judah,
and they shall sell them to the Sabeans,
to a people far off: for the Lord hath spoken it.
They shall sell
For afterward God sold them by Nebuchadnezzar and Alexander the Great, because of the love he had for his people, and by this they were comforted, as though they themselves had sold them.
Sell them to
Sell them to the Sabeans – The Persian Artaxerxes Mnemon and Darius Ochus, and chiefly the Greek Alexander, reduced the Phoenician and Philistine powers.
Thirty thousand Tyrians after the capture of Tyre by the last conqueror, and multitudes of Philistines on the taking of Gaza, were sold as slaves.
The Jews are here said to do that which the God of Judah does in vindication of their wrong, namely, sell the Phoenicians who sold them, to a people “far off,” as was Greece, to where the Jews had been sold.
To the Sabeans
This refers to the Sabeans at the most remote extremity of Arabia (compare Jeremiah 6:20, Matthew 12:42).
The Lord has spoken!
We have a speaking God.
That is what this text also tells us.
His words are truth, and that gives us courage.
Has He not said that He has mercy on the broken, on the despised, on the sunken and forgotten in Christ? He fulfills His Word, even today.
▪︎ On the world;
▪︎ On the mission fields;
▪︎ And no less in your own life.
But His Word is also a word of exhortation: do not harden yourself!
After all, the Bible also tells us that He is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:29 NASB
Our God is a consuming fire.
Deuteronomy 4:24 NASB
The Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Gladly we may know that Jesus went with our sins through that fire for us, so we can have eternal life.
