Luke 24:16 NASB
But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.
That they didn’t recognize the resurrected King was not because the outward appearance of Jesus somehow changed, it was because of their eyes.
Your eyes can be bad so you can’t see. Being blind or visually impaired is a bad thing.
But do you know that without the Holy Spirit, to show us what we need to see, we are all spiritually blind? That we, without Him, all need eye ointment from the merciful High Priest.
Revelation 3:17-18
¹⁷Because you say,
I am rich, and have become wealthy,
and have need of nothing,
and you do not know
that you are wretched and miserable
and poor and blind and naked,
(without hope and in great need)
¹⁸I advise you to buy from Me
gold refined by fire
so that you may become rich,
and white garments (representing righteousness)
so that you may clothe yourself,
and that the shame of your nakedness
will not be revealed;
and eye salve to anoint your eyes
so that you may see.
But there is still something else about these two disciples.
The Lord Jesus walks beside them, but they do not recognize Him.
They talk about His suffering, about His death on the cross, about His burial, and about the rumors of His resurrection, so their hearts are filled with what happened to Him, but now they don’t know Him, now they don’t recognize Him.
That was really in their eyes.
Their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him
The Lord does that for a high purpose.
It is not tease them. It is because He wants to teach them in great love and compassion the way that He had to go to save them.
Indeed,
▪︎ The Lord can walk beside us,
▪︎ The Lord can speak to us,
and yet we may not know that it is the Lord, until He pleases to reveal Himself.
Sometimes a stranger may cross your way, maybe even on the Internet, and that stranger, although you don’t know him, may explain to you whatever you needed to understand, and point you continually to the Christ. The Lord may be using him to draw you nearer to Him.
Therefore, we must ask Jesus whether He will reveal to us, if what we read and hear is bringing us closer to Him.
We all need to follow Him, and stay close to Him, so He can teach us more.
More and more we have to learn from Him and from His work.
