Matthew 11:25
At that time Jesus answered and said,
I thank thee, O Father,
Lord of heaven and earth,
because thou hast hid these things
from the wise and prudent,
and hast revealed them unto babes.
Devotional
The people who see themselves as wise and sensible…
▪︎ Think they can save themselves.
▪︎ Think they know it all.
▪︎ Believe that they do not need further education.
▪︎ Trust in the merits of their own works.
It is hidden from them that their own wisdom and self-righteousness are but filthy rags, no more than old rags.
Because they think they can save themselves, and because they trust in their own works, they take offense at the gospel of free grace.
In this we also see the attitude of the Pharisees and scribes as well as that of the religious man who does not fear God.
You sometimes hear people say we are all children of God.
But that is not true, we are all creatures of God.
Creatures fallen since the fall, and if we are children then we are children of wrath,
▪︎ who urgently need to convert ourselves to Him,
▪︎ who urgently need the grace of God,
▪︎ who, without accepting the sacrifice God made for us to save us, are lost forever.
John 1:12
But as many as (whoever) received him (Jesus), to them gave (granted, delivered) he the power (permission, the authority) to become (to come into existence, begin to be) the sons (children) of God, [even] to them that believe (to trust in Jesus or God as able to aid either in obtaining or in doing something: saving faith) on his name.
It is only pure grace to be made a child.
To see…
▪︎ that we are helpless in ourselves,
▪︎ that we don’t even have strength in ourselves to serve the Lord
▪︎ and that we don’t even have power in ourselves to keep His commandments.
- Such a child desires to be taught, to be guided, and to be strengthened by Him.
- Such a child will experience the disgust of sin
- Such a child comes to realize that it needs the all-cleansing Blood of the Christ.
- And such a child may get to know the fear of God.
