And Jesus went about.
The verse is all but identical with Matthew 4:23, and may be described as recording our Lord’s second mission circuit in Galilee, in which He was accompanied probably by His disciples, whom, however, He had not as yet invested with a delegated authority as His “apostles,” or representatives.
It is manifestly the beginning of the section which contains the great discourse of Matthew 10, and was intended to lead up to it.
And Jesus went about all the cities and (the, Revised Version) villages.
The Revised Version rightly restricts the “all” to the cities (τὰς πόλεις πάσας καὶ τὰς κώμας). It would have been impossible to visit all the villages.
A village was distinguished from a city by being
- Unwalled (though occasionally towns were themselves unwalled);
- Dependent on the cities (cf. Schurer, II. 1. p. 154, seq.).
Teaching, etc. From this point the verse is identical with Matthew 4:23, except that the end of that verse, “among the people,” is not found in the true text of our passage, but has been inserted thence.
Its omission here and the alteration of the words, “in all Galilee,” to “all the cities and the villages,” are both due to the wider scope of what follows.
Observe that in Matthew 4:23 our Lord’s circuit is the occasion of crowds resorting to him, and serves as an introduction to a full account of his personal teaching, while here it is the occasion of his sending representatives, and serves as an introduction to his commission to them.
Every sickness and every disease
That is every variety or type, rather than every individual case.
As to the phrase, “healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness,” notice that the recurrence of terminology (Matthew 4:23; 10:1) falls in with the oral theory, especially in its catechetical form.
The work of healing was, we must believe, dependent, as before, on the faith of those who came seeking to be healed.
Of the two words, the former is in the Greek the stronger, and, though the relative significance of the English words is not sharply defined, it would, perhaps, be better to invert the renderings.

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages.
Jesus is looking for people.
That is why He visits the cities.
Cities are not so highly regarded in the Bible.
The city in the Bible is usually the conglomeration of people who live without God.
There most people say: God?! The Bible?! The church?!
I’m not interested!
Isn’t it wonderful that we read that Jesus does not skip the city.
He doesn’t ignore those people!
There are no hopeless cases for Him.
He also visits the villages. He does not overlook them. Sometimes they are so small that you can’t even discover their names on an extensive map. You would pass them in no time. Not so with Jesus.
He does not say: Only a few people live there, they are not worth the trouble to Me. It is wonderful that we read that Jesus does not skip the villages.
Even the individual, the lonely, the single are not forgotten by Him.
In those cities and villages Jesus sees the people.
And… He sees what others don’t see!
The Lord sees me as I am, and knows me deeper than I ever know myself!
And the Lord sees you as you are, and knows you deeper than you ever know yourself!
