Matthew 5:48 NASB
Therefore you are to be perfect,
as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Devotional
Is the Lord Jesus here calling His disciples to perfectionism?
Is it possible, is it in our power, to become perfect?
Do not even the most holy have only a small principle of obedience?
No, the Lord Jesus means something else.
He does not simply say: Be perfect!
He adds, as your Father is perfect.
The Father, He Himself has said, makes no distinction.
He does well to the evil and the good.
He makes the sun rise and makes it rain on all people.
Thus He expects us to show love, not only to our friends, but also (especially) to our enemies.
That cannot be taught by the Pharisees.
They only do good to those who do good to them.
We can only learn that from Him Who gave His life for His enemies
