Matthew 5:13-16 NASB
¹³You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
¹⁴You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; ¹⁵nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
¹⁶Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Devotional
You are the salt and light to the world.
Jesus has congratulated his listeners.
They are His followers, in them something of Him can be recognized. Jesus takes the people who follow Him seriously.
▪︎ You are the salt of the earth,
▪︎ You are the light for the world.
Not you can become it, but: you are.
Salt has an important function.
Salt adds flavor to food and also keeps it from spoiling.
Followers of Jesus bring flavor to people’s lives and also keep the world from corrupting
Light is also important.
If you’re still on the road after dark, the light of the city you need to go to is an important beacon. If you didn’t see that light, you couldn’t orient yourself. A follower of Jesus is a light in the dark world, a beacon along the way, showing people where to go.
But salt and light should work.
Salt that is powerless and light that does not shine freely have no meaning. Then their function is completely lost.
Salt must be powerful and light must be able to shine freely; then they fulfill their purpose (Matthew 5:13-15).
So, let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
The good you do allows people to see that you are like Jesus (cf. Ephesians 2:8-10 and 2 Corinthians 3:17,18). When they see that, they will be impressed and magnify the Father in Heaven. “That’s how it happens,” Jesus says firmly. He firmly believes it.
Being a light to the world…
Many Christians long for it and struggle with it.
When are you a light to the world? Jesus says, “If you do good works, the deeds that belong to the Kingdom of God.”
The deeds that Jesus will soon talk about. If you listen to that and do that, you are the light to the world.
