Matthew 4:2 NASB
And after He had fasted
forty days and forty nights,
He then became hungry.
Study
Mark (Mark 1:13) and Luke (Luke 4:2) indicate that Jesus was tempted throughout the forty-day period, but the three explicitly mentioned trials took place at the end of fasting.
Jesus fasted forty days, as did Moses (Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 9:9) and Elijah (1 Kings 19:8) before Him.
Just as the mediation of the old covenant was accompanied by a forty-day fast (also the forty-day journey of Elijah to Sinai(!) reminds of Moses), so also the beginning of the new covenant.
Jesus’ fast was complete: He ate nothing (Luke 4:2).
