Mark 11:20 AV
And in the morning, as they passed by,
they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
Devotional
The Lord has cursed a fig tree.
He has spoken with his word of power and the tree has lost the leaves that he so proudly showed. But not only has the foliage disappeared, but so has the roots of the tree.
She is now withered and dead.
Because if the roots have dried out, then there is no saving.
Then it is over, for good with such a tree.
Then we must give up all hope.
There is nothing we can do against that.
In reality, however, this is also our state.
We too are naturally withered from the roots.
We, too, do not produce the fruits of faith and repentance.
But NOW there is the miracle of Christ’s quickening Spirit.
It CAN raise us from the dead and give us life in our souls.
It goes through a way of humbling and confessing.
▪︎ Humility because we cannot bring forth fruits for glory to God
▪︎ and confessing guilt because we have declared death upon us through our fault.
Because we are debtors, not victims.
Happy is he who may lie so at Christ’s feet and thirst with Him for life from Him.
He will make him a green and fruitful olive tree in the house of your God.
