Some further information
Moses and Elijah are gone, the cloud is gone, and the heavenly voice has ceased to speak. Apparently the appearance ends abruptly (exapina – suddenly) and the situation is again as before (“Jesus alone with them”; cf. Mark 9:2).
Jesus did not hold on to the heavenly glory He had tasted, but denied it being aware to walk the way to the cross.
Now let us reflect on this
What is said in these words is what matters in all of our lives.
The point is that we see “only the Savior”.
It is great if we are discovered to ourselves, and it is no less great if we are allowed to make a sincere confession of guilt before God. I certainly do not want to belittle all of that. And yet, I say that all this, is no ground for salvation.
The Lord wants to use this all to bring us to His Son.
The ground of salvation is Jesus Christ alone!
For my burden will never be released from me, unless I have found Jesus.
Or to say it with this text, when I have seen Jesus.
Jesus in His humiliation and in His exaltation!
Were we allowed to see Him through faith.
Do you see Him as our only comfort in life and in death?
If so, then by grace we may say:
Such is my love,
Such is my friend;
He carries the banner above tens of thousands.
Where His righteousness has been bestowed upon us, we are righteous before God, and can appear before Him without fear.
