Hosea 8:5 NASB
He has rejected your calf, O Samaria, saying,
“My anger burns against them!”
How long will they be incapable of innocence?
In other words:
I do not like the gold bull that the people in Samaria worship. I am very angry with the people in Israel. It will be a long time before they are without sin.
Israel does not come to the Lord to heal their ailments. They expect it from a new king, a new ally, Assur, to give them political and economic salvation.
That it is also connected to bowing to the gods of the gentiles will be of no concern to them.
Are not Israel’s sins, our sins too?
- For healing of soul and body we give ourselves easier to quack doctors rather than to the Lord.
- For solutions to political and economic problems, we rely on our own understanding or the support of other countries. And many governments no longer pray or read the Bible. No, they no longer recognize God and think they can do it all themselves.
- The Lord is usually no longer the first, but the last aid for accidents.
We do know that there is no Physician outside of God.
And do we still want… rather impurity than purity as medicine?
‘How long…?’ complains the Lord.
How long? Do you hear God’s struggle for Israel’s salvation?
With love He also points us to the one medicine against sin, namely the Christ.
He took upon Himself our ailments, so that we might get well.
He is the only “Source of life”.
It was Jesus Who lifted up our pain from us! And He took away the things that cause us to feel sad. But we thought that he had become ill. We thought that God had hit Him very badly. And we thought that He was sick. God let people put a sword into Him, but we had done the wrong things. God let people hurt Him because of our sins. God gave to Him the punishment that caused peace for us. His wounds have given health to us.
