Matthew 12:39
But He answered and said to them,
An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign;
and yet no sign will be given to it
but the sign of Jonah the prophet
Devotional
No sign shall be given them except the sign of Jonah the Prophet.
The Lord’s answer to the question of a sign is not a pleasant one.
He knows, and says, that it is an evil and adulterous generation that asks for a sign. That’s not so nice to say. Adulterous!
Although they may not have understood, and their question was unjustified, they nevertheless received the answer they desired. A sign that Jesus was (and is!) indeed the promised Messiah
The adulterous generation has broken the covenant in which they so boasted.
In unbelief they rejected Him, who had come to His own.
Now no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah the Prophet.
Jonah was miraculously rescued through the entrails of the fish from the heart of the sea. Thus he had been a walking miracle when he went to Nineveh to preach the message at God’s command.
No one from Nineveh had seen him come out of the fish; they just had to believe in the word that he spoke.
In a similar way we are set before Him, Who arose from the dead, and came forth therein as the Son of God. None of us has seen it, but like in Nineveh the need of repentance is, and will be preached. We just need faith to believe the message, and act upon it.
We often seek startling things to accept what is proclaimed.
But only faith learns to recognize its truth.
