Matthew 12:38
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him,
Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.
Devotional
It seems to be a lot: the scribes and Pharisees ask the Lord Jesus for a sign. We wouldn’t have expected that from them. Are they not enemies, pious enemies, of Him?
They also address Him so neatly: Master …
Let’s remember, though, that asking for a sign in itself doesn’t mean anything.
There is a big difference between Gideon and them.
He asked for a sign by which he might know whether the Lord would deliver from the Mideanites by his hand. That was asking for a sign to strengthen his faith.
But this questioning stems directly from unbelief.
They ask this question precisely when the miracle of the healing of one who is possessed of the devil has taken place.
In it He is already revealed as the Messiah. But they can’t have that.
No, it is not from hunger for Him that they say this.
Rather from enmity against Him.
They want to tempt Him to prove who He was with His actions.
Don’t think now: Those scribes and Pharisees..!
But Examine yourself, how is it with you?
