Proverbs 16:25
There is a way which seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.
Devotional
The dictionary defines a habit as “an established course of action or behavior.”
All habits have a beginning, but usually there is no thought of their becoming a permanent part of one’s character.
Sometimes you will see a path through the grass because many people were walking there. It was not meant to be a path, but people chose it because it was a shortcut, and after a while no grass would grow there anymore.
The path is the record and the proof of a HABIT of many taking the shortcut.
Years ago some one saw the advantage of this step-saving way, and it became a habit to take this route day after day. Other feet decided to follow their lead, and now all “habitually” take the same shortcut. It’s the path of least resistance.
In this case it is a harmless habit, but bad ones are formed in the same way.
For instance, the poor alcoholic can remember when he took his first step on the evil road which led him ever downward.
There was a time when he could have said, “NO!”
But his continual yielding to temptation not only formed a path, but a rut that daily became deeper.
This is true of every habit: it seems so innocent at the beginning, but if it is the wrong thing to do, it will bind a man and drag him down.
How important it is to establish good habits such as prayer and Bible reading. It will keep you out of sin’s RUT.
Remember, the first step is the important one.
You cannot repeat what you have not done before.
You can never be too careful
Of the habits which you sow;
Joy from good will slowly ripen,
But the evil quick doth grow!
