Matthew 13:45
Again, the kingdom of heaven
is like unto a merchant man,
seeking goodly pearls
Devotional
Another parable follows. This time it’s about a merchant. A dealer in pearls.
The image of this parable is also close to the national life of Israel. After all, Jews are a trading people par excellence. In our minds we see an eloquent and much traveled merchant. He spares no expense or effort to obtain his merchandise. He is looking for pearls. Beautiful pearls! He knows how to value the pearls.
We are also pearl seekers. Everyone is looking for something.
What a journey, what a cost a person makes to search for pearls.
We seek the pearls of happiness, wealth, honor, a good job, a beautiful home.
Fallen man is always looking for the pearl of the lost paradise.
But we’re looking so wrong!
We’ll look for it down here, on earth. We look for it in ourselves.
We chase after the bubbles of the world. We let ourselves be enchanted.
Let the course of our seeking be determined by the prophetic Word of God.
Look for the pearl of the kingdom of God. Seek the Christ pearl while He is yet to be found.
