1 John 3:10
By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious:
anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God,
nor the one who does not love his brother.
John distinguishes here between children of God and children of the devil.
A child of God is straightforward and loves his brother or sister.
A child of the devil does just the opposite.
People sometimes say: “I can see who you are.” In this way it is also visible whether you are a child of God or a child of the devil.
That separation even runs through families.
Just look at those two brothers. Cain kills Abel.
And why? What had Abel done wrong? Nothing!
He is killed because he behaves correctly, because he is righteous.
His brother can’t stand that.
Many centuries later we see the same thing happening with the Lord Jesus, God’s Child.
What an outburst of anger we see at Calvary.
Devil children conspire against the Son of God.
Why?
Because He is righteous.
And we?
Those who follow Jesus must reckon with hatred.
Why?
Because, by grace, you bear the image of Jesus.
The world can’t stand that.
Despite that I want to say: Have courage! His love conquers!
