Matthew 26:33 NASB
But Peter said to Him (Jesus),
Even though all may fall away
because of You,
I will never fall away.
Devotional
Because of our fall in Paradise we have, among other things, also lost our knowledge. Our knowledge of the Lord and the things of His kingdom, but even the knowledge of ourselves.
Therefore self-knowledge is also a fruit of Divine grace. We can never receive too much of that grace, because practice shows that we never get to know ourselves fully, even after this grace has been received.
This is evident in Peter.
We cannot say that he was a man devoid of grace.
Yet it turns out, that in his self-knowledge, he was far from finished learning.
On the night of Jesus’ betrayal, He says that they will all be offended at Him.
And then Peter says, it may be so with the others, but not with me: I shall never be offended at You.
And that same man, no matter how sincere his words may have been at that moment, he denied his Savior thrice during that same night, because he was offended at him.
It’s been a deep lesson for him, but it’s also a lesson for us.
We learn from it:
▪︎ That we never stop learning in our self-knowledge.
▪︎ That we can never judge the Lord too high
▪︎ That we can never judge too low on ourselves.
