Matthew 6:13 NASB
And do not lead us into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
[For Yours is the kingdom
and the power
and the glory forever.
Amen.’]
Story
Our father
In Liberia, a language helper of a translator began to translate the Lord’s Prayer. The phrase “Lead us not into temptation” was too difficult for him.
After much explanation from the translator, his language helper thought he had found the translation: “Don’t catch us if we sin.” This seemed logical to him: a sin is only sin when it is discovered, he thought.
Just catch yourself explaining God’s Word logically.
It often suits us better, you know…
The translator soon discovered the error and corrected the sentence.
Now he really had a theological bone to pick with his language helper. Apparently this one had a very different view of the Heavenly Father than he did.
Not so strange, of course, in a young Christian African environment.
In many cultures, gods are worshiped to propitiate them so that they turn a blind eye… Thankfully, our Father is different.
