Psalms 107:10-16 NASB
¹⁰There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, ¹¹because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High.
¹²Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help.
¹³Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. ¹⁴He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And broke their bands apart.
¹⁵Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! ¹⁶For He has shattered gates of bronze, And cut bars of iron asunder.
Devotional
There are other ways of fleeing, which at first glance may not even look like fleeing: alcohol, drugs, vandalism, gambling, the Internet, porn movies, or simply having a ‘mask’.
However, this flight is very dangerous.
In Romans 6 we see that all kinds of things can so control us that we become addicted to them. Then there is a switch, so that other powers take over our lives and we cannot go back on our own.
You may have been through so much that you try to escape reality.
Many young people flee into drugs because life is so hard for them, that they don’t know how to survive.
Are you such a refugee yourself?
Then try to talk about it with someone you trust, seek help so that you can learn how to really come into your own: to become that boy or girl that God has in mind.
God liberates.
He breaks ties that you, or others, could never break.
Today, let’s pray for the young (or the elderly!) who have fled from themselves, or from their painful past, and have become entangled in the nets of addiction.
And let’s keep our eyes open for the young (and older) people around us!
